Alkaline Diet
The Alkaline Diet, also known as the Acid-Alkaline Diet or Alkaline Ash Diet, revolves around the concept of pH levels in the body. It suggests that the foods we consume can affect the acidity or alkalinity (the pH value) of our bodies. Proponents of this diet believe that by replacing acid-forming foods with alkaline foods, they can reduce the risk of illnesses and improve health.
The diet encourages the consumption of alkaline foods, which are believed to be better for the body's pH balance. These include most fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes. On the other hand, foods considered to be acid-forming – like meat, dairy, most grains, processed foods, and alcohol – are discouraged.
Compared to diets such as Keto or Atkins, which focus on macronutrient composition (low-carb, high-fat), the Alkaline Diet prioritizes the 'potential renal acid load' (PRAL) of foods. The PRAL is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity residue that remains in the body after metabolism. While it shares a focus on fruits and vegetables with diets like the Plant-Based or Vegan diets, the reasons for this focus differ. Alkaline Dieters believe that these foods can directly affect body pH, while Plant-Based or Vegan Dieters may prioritize these foods for their nutrient content, fiber, and lack of animal products.
